The Challenge
Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation (MSFN), located in west-central Saskatchewan, is a growing community of approximately 1,900 members with a strong focus on economic development and self-sufficiency. To support these goals, MSFN identified the need for a local business that could generate sustainable revenue, create employment opportunities, and meet the community’s everyday needs.
In response, MSFN initiated the development of a new gas station. The project aimed to strengthen local infrastructure, reduce reliance on external services, and serve as a catalyst for broader economic growth within the Nation.
Our Approach
Ballad worked closely with MSFN to develop a tailored business plan aligned with the Nation’s priorities and long-term vision. This included conducting a community needs assessment, analyzing local market conditions, and designing a business model focused on sustainability and community benefit.
The approach also incorporated capacity-building elements, with operational strategies to support long-term success. Key considerations included addressing challenges unique to rural and remote contexts, such as ensuring reliable supply chains and developing flexible financial models to manage risk.
The final business plan positioned the gas station as both a viable commercial venture and a strategic asset for the community. It outlined clear pathways for implementation, operations, and future growth, while supporting employment, local service delivery, and revenue generation within the Nation.
Together, this work supports MSFN in advancing economic self-reliance, strengthening local infrastructure, and laying the foundation for a more diversified and resilient economy.
